Note from the Composer

“The Cat and the Saxophone (2 A. M.)” is the sixth movement of Virtues and Vices: 7 Pieces for SATB Chorus and Piano and it explores the virtue/vice of temperance/gluttony. This jazzy partner song celebrates the 100-year anniversary of “Everybody Loves My Baby”, recorded by Louis Armstrong and Clarence Williams’ Blue Five in 1924. This piece combines “Everybody Loves My Baby” (“band theme”) with an original melody (“bar theme”). In Langston Hughes’ poem, the text formatting highlights that there are two distinct speakers present: the bartender and the band singer. Changing jazz styles heighten the humor, charm, and flirtation of the music. As the music speeds up and builds to a group scat section, an improvised scat solo drives the ensemble to a final rowdy shout chorus! Does the piece resemble temperance or gluttony? Optional performance instructions allow performers to play up on the theatre of this piece.
